The Smell of Rain

The Smell of Rain A cold March wind danced around the dead of night in Dallas as the Doctor walked into the small hospital room of Diana Blessing. Still groggy from surgery, her husband David held her hand as they braced themselves for the latest news. That afternoon of March 10,1991, complications had forced Diana, only 24 weeks pregnant, to Danae Lu Blessing. At 12 inches long and weighing only one pound and nine ounces, they already knew she was perilously premature. Still, the doctor's soft words dropped like bombs. I don't think she's going to make it, he said, as kindly as he could. "There's only a 10 percent chance she will live through the night, and even then, if by some slim chance she does make it, her future could be a very cruel one." Numb with disbelief, David and Diana listened as the doctor described the devastating problems Danae would likely face if she survived. She would never walk, she would never talk, she would probab...

Tomorrow

Tomorrow If I knew this would be the last time that I'd see you fall asleep, I would tuck you in more tightly and pray the Lord your soul to keep. If I knew this would be the last time I'd see you walk out the door, I would give you a hug and a kiss and call you back for one more. If I knew this would be the last time I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise, I would videotape each action and word, so I could play them back day after day. If I knew this would be the last time, I could spare an extra minute or two to stop and say I love you instead of assuming you would know I do. If I knew this was to be the last day I would be there to share with you, well I'm sure you'll have so many more, so I can let just this one slip away. For surely there is always tomorrow to make up for an oversight, and we always get a second chance to make everything right. There will always be another day to say our I love you's. And certainly there's to be another c...

The Man In The Glass

The Man In The Glass Anonymous When you get what you want in your struggle for self And the world makes you king for a day, Just go to the mirror and look at yourself And see what that man has to say. For it isn’t your father or mother or wife Whose judgment upon you must pass. The fellow whose verdict counts most in you life Is the one staring back from the glass. You may be like Jack Horner and chisel a plum And think you’re a wonderful guy. But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum If you can’t look him straight in the eye. He’s the fellow to please-never mind all the rest, For he’s with you clear to the end. And you’ve passed your most dangerous, difficult test If the man in the glass is your friend. You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years And get pats on the back as you pass. But your final reward will be heartache and tears If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.
